State Representative Fred Atchley announced that he and State Representative Andy Farmer successfully secured $20 million in funding for critical improvements to Newport Highway during the 114th General Assembly, delivering on a key infrastructure priority for residents of District 12.
The substantial investment represents one of the most significant transportation investments in the region's recent history and marks the first phase of improvements to a six-mile stretch of US-411. The funding will create a center turn lane and make improvements to certain intersections along this vital corridor that connects East Tennessee communities.
"Newport Highway is critical to our district - it's how our families get to work, how our businesses move goods, and how emergency services reach our communities," said Rep. Atchley. "For too long, this highway has needed significant improvements. During this legislative session, Representative Farmer and I made it a top priority to secure the funding necessary to address these needs finally."
Newport Highway serves as a crucial transportation artery for residents across Sevier County and surrounding areas, connecting rural communities to employment centers, medical facilities, and essential services. The highway carries a significant volume of both local and commercial traffic, making safety improvements and capacity enhancements necessary for economic development and quality of life.
"I've driven Newport Highway countless times, and I've heard from constituents about their concerns," Atchley explained. "Whether it's families worried about their daily commute or businesses that need reliable transportation for their operations, this highway affects everyone in our district. Working with Representative Farmer, I made sure Nashville understood that this wasn't just another road project - this is about our community's future."
While this $20 million investment represents a significant first step, Representatives Atchley and Farmer are continuing to seek additional funding for the complete expansion of the six-mile stretch to four lanes, recognizing the long-term transportation needs of the growing region.
It's expected that the Tennessee Department of Transportation will begin the construction improvements of Newport Highway later this year.
